Evaluates local democracy in El Almendro and Kukrahill using a multidimensional framework covering civil liberties, institutional performance, and citizen participation. Results show moderate perceptions of freedom and institutions but very low levels of civic participation, which substantially reduce overall democratic quality.

Toruño, C. & López Espinoza, Á. · RENET, Managua · in Spanish. Analyzes the demand for technical and vocational occupations in Nicaragua during the economic crisis. Drawing on surveys of firms, technical training centers, and secondary students, it identifies gaps between labor-market demand and the existing supply of technical education, highlighting technical education as a key pathway for youth employment and entrepreneurship.

Assesses the condition of democracy in Nicaragua by examining elections, civil liberties, rule of law, and citizen engagement, arguing that the country has experienced a prolonged process of democratic deterioration culminating in the crisis that intensified after 2018.

Examines the relationship between motherhood and women's labor-force participation in Nicaragua, finding that childcare responsibilities and structural labor-market barriers contribute to lower participation and persistent gender inequalities. Expanding access to childcare and supportive workplace policies can help increase women's economic participation.

Huelva, L. & Toruño, C. · FUNIDES, Managua · in Spanish. Evaluates how public spending, social programs, subsidies, and taxation affect poverty and inequality in Nicaragua. Spending on health and education significantly reduces poverty, inequality, and vulnerability, while some subsidies and indirect taxes are less progressive — better targeting could substantially increase effectiveness without additional public resources.

Huelva, L., Pacheco, C. & Toruño, C. · FUNIDES, Managua · in Spanish. Examines the determinants of student achievement in Nicaragua using TERCE data. Academic performance remains below the Latin American average, with significant disparities linked to socioeconomic background, school type, ethnicity, and gender — family and individual characteristics play a larger role in outcomes than school-level factors.
